Safety Information

This is a friendly part of the country but common sense and caution should always prevail as in many places across the world. Avoid walking around alone at all times and keep to busy well-lit areas at night. Make sure to lock cars with valuables hidden out of sight and park in properly guarded car parks. Exercise caution at ATMs and avoid carrying large sums of cash or wearing expensive looking jewellery and do not leave bags and wallets lying around on tables etc.

Some areas in major cities are more dangerous than others.  You can have a wonderful holiday and still avoid these areas. Check with hotel staff or other locals who will advise on which areas to avoid.

Do not hitchhike or pick up hitchhikers and when driving exercise caution by locking doors especially when stationary.

The majority of travellers to South Africa visit the country without incident and by making sure you exercise common sense and general precautions you can ensure a safe and enjoyable trip to the Garden Route and Eastern Cape.
