Oubaai Golf Club
Gardenroute
Oubaai Golf Club is proud to be the first Ernie Els signature golf course in South Africa. In the design, three-time Major Championship Winner Ernie Els and his team have taken full advantage of the spectacular landscape. Furthermore, they had the full support of Jack Nicklaus Design, the privately held company of golf legend Jack Nicklaus and family, as technical advisors. Situated 10 minutes from George Airport in a town called Herolds Bay, Oubaai is a naturally undisturbed site nestling in the heart of South Africa’s Garden Route. Its position between the ocean and the majestic Outeniqua Mountains lends itself naturally to the development of an exclusive golf course.
The golf course is a Links layout where veld grasses line the lush fairways and greens. Being a coastal golf course you will find generous fairways that are well bunkered to penalise stray drives. It is a course that will look to reward the good shot and penalise the bad shot which is the essence of a true championship golf course. The course measures 6516 metres from the Pro tees, which is long for a coastal course, but the unique fact about the course is that it can be played and enjoyed by all abilities of golfers. The layout of the course is a traditional Links, being 9 holes out and 9 holes back. The resort offers an exclusive members-only clubhouse on the 1st tee and a visitors’ clubhouse on the 10th tee, each having its own Pro shop, locker rooms, a bar and restaurant
The most photographed hole is the Par 3 17th where you stand with a green below you and the Indian Ocean framing your view. With a mere 144 metres from the back, one would be forgiven for thinking this is an easy hole. The green is guarded by 4 bunkers and elevation and wind come into play, making it one of the most challenging plays. However, the opportunity to see whales in the Ocean makes it all worthwhile.
The second most talked about Par 3 is the 6th where you stand on the tee box and enter another world. The green is framed by the Outeniqua Mountains in the distance and the Gwaing River flows below you. A 120 metre carry is required to cross the gorge and reach the fairway and as you look at the ocean to the right you may just be lucky enough to hear a Fish Eagle cry. Oubaai Golf Club offers a wonderfully challenging and enjoyable golfing experience. We challenge you to come and experience it firsthand.
