Description
Starting from your hotel or guesthouse, the tour travels north to the southern foothills of the Swartberg Mountains. The 900-meter scenic eco-tour ascends the gravel Swartberg Pass, constructed by road engineer Thomas Bain between 1884 and 1888.
At the summit, 1,580 meters above sea level, explore the national monument on a guided walk. Learn about the dry-stone construction technique and view panoramic landscapes of the Klein and Great Karoo.
A qualified eco-guide introduces the area’s sandstone formations, which are over 300 million years old, and the diverse fynbos vegetation including proteas, cone bushes, and pin cushions. The guide will also point out local wildlife such as Verreaux's eagle, jackal buzzard, sunbirds, and the agile klipspringer.
The experience offers tranquility reminiscent of a time when wagons and horseback riders traversed the pass. From “Die Top” at 1,350 meters above sea level, enjoy vistas over both slopes of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The descent includes stops for scenic walks and birdwatching along the Swartberg Pass toward the “Tee Berg” lookout.
The tour concludes with a light lunch before returning to your accommodation in Oudtshoorn.
