Garden Route 5-Day Tour: Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Hermanus
This 5-day guided tour explores the Garden Route highlights, including hiking, wildlife, caves, wine tasting, and coastal towns. It suits nature lovers and cultural travelers.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Cape Town to Oudtshoorn
- Depart Cape Town at 8am via the R62 Wine Route, passing Worcester, Robertson, and Montagu
- Afternoon tour of Oudtshoorn, followed by a visit to the Cango Caves, Africa’s largest show cave system and South Africa’s oldest tourist attraction
- Overnight stay at Karoo Retreat or similar in Oudtshoorn
Day 2: Oudtshoorn to Knysna
- Morning 3-hour 4x4 game drive at Botlierskop Game Reserve, home to elephants, lions, rhino, kudus, buffaloes, impalas, zebras, and giraffes
- Brief tour of Wilderness, then transfer to Knysna
- Overnight at Russel Hotel or similar in Knysna
Day 3: Knysna to Plettenberg Bay
- Hiking at Robberg Nature Reserve (a World Heritage Site with 120 million-year-old rock formations)
- Visit white sand beaches in Plettenberg Bay and the Knysna Heads
- Optional activities: Bloukrans Bridge bungy jump (world’s highest), sunset boat cruise in Knysna
- Evening beach exploration and dining at a local restaurant
- Overnight at Russel Hotel or similar in Knysna
Day 4: Knysna to Hermanus
- Morning visit to Swellendam, one of South Africa’s oldest towns known for Cape Dutch architecture
- Travel to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet
- Continue to Hermanus for overnight at a 3-star lodge or hotel
Day 5: Hermanus to Cape Town
- Whale watching in Hermanus (seasonal)
- Afternoon wine tasting at Benguela Cove Wine Estate, sampling five different wines
- Visit Betty’s Bay to view endangered African penguins
- Drive the scenic Whale Coast Route back to Cape Town to conclude the tour in the late afternoon

The best time for whale watching in Hermanus is between June and November. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure.
